12 August 2010 C.E. Meeting

Note of the meeting of the North Tolsta Historical Society at the Schoolhouse North Tolsta on Wednesday 17 th November 2010 at 7.30p.m.

1. Present and Apologies

2. Note of the last meeting

The note of the last meeting on 12 th August 2010 was approved.

3. Matters arising

Website has been updated.

4. Project

Project title is - Tolsta Heritage Interpretation Project

As information leaflets for the two sites will be bilingual an application for grant assistance for £2000 has been submitted to CNAG.

An application form has also been submitted to Sgioba na Gàidhlig at CNES.

A cheque for £1000 has been received from them.

An application has also been sent to Awards for All. This application was for the sum of £7,700. This was for the plinths, plaques, information leaflets and the road improvements necessary to access the Cladach site. Awards for All will let us know at the beginning of December if our application has been successful.

5. Phone Book

Sub committee to meet on Monday 22 nd November at 7.30 p.m.

6. Caidreachas meeting

Margaret and Christina attended the AGM meeting on the 30 th August.

Donald attended the meeting on Monday 4 th October.

£15 annual fees have been paid.

7. Lews Castle Project and Tasglann

Emma, Rhoda, Christina and Margaret attended meeting at Museum nan Eilean to discuss the future of Museum nan Eilean. If applications for funding are successful it is to be incorporated into the developments at Lews Castle.

Development proposals for Lews Castle and Museum nan Eilean:

  • Enhance and transform Museum nan Eilean.
  • Establish a new archive facility for the Outer Hebrides.
  • Provide high quality hospitality, function and visitor facilities in a historic setting.
  • Raise the profile of the Castle’s designed landscape as a visitor attraction.

Tasglann:

Tasglann nan Eilean Siar ( Hebridean Archives ) has been established with funding from the European Regional Development Fund, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Comunn na Gaidhlig.

This three year project will create a professionally staffed archive service for the Western Isles. The Tasglann makes accessible to the public the records of the Comhairle, its predecessor bodies and collections of records gifted or deposited with the Comhairle.

Additionally, the Tasglann will offer advice and practical support to those who care for archives e.g. Comainn Eachdraidh.

David Powell of Tasglann will visit the C.E. on Monday 22 nd November at 2p.m.

8. Hebridean Connections

At the beginning of the year the Committee would like to arrange a fact finding visit to Kershader to the South Lochs C.E. Everyone present showed interest in a visit to the Angus Macleod Archives.

9. Finance and Correspondence

Balance at 17 th November was £2508.07

Correspondence: Gordon Murray has contacted the C.E. to ask if we have stories which he could collate and use with his students. Committee agreed to invite him to visit the C.E. to see if we have suitable material for his classes.

Geoff Scarlett (survivor from Operation Cauldron) contacted the C.E. to say he has not been able to visit the island this year, but is planning a visit for spring 2011.

Committee members were asked to note the date and the electricity meter reading when they visit the CE. This is so that we can note how many units are being used per quarter.

No date was set for the next meeting.
