Minutes of January 2012 meeting - January 25, 2012

Note of the meeting of the North Tolsta Historical Society at the Schoolhouse, North Tolsta on Wednesday 25th January 2012 at 7.30pm

Note of the meeting of Wednesday 7th December 2012 was approved.

Matters Arising:

Hogmanay Supper

A DVD by Peter Macleod was enjoyed by those present and the Community Council wishes to send thanks to the Comann Eachdraidh for this contribution to a successful evening.
Project Update

A draft copy of the pamphlet Cuairt Mun Aird was presented to the committee for any corrections. Proof reading was meticulously carried out and it is hoped the pamphlet will be ready for publication shortly.

Angus Mackay to be contacted regarding some more infill and drainage at the site of the Garry Plaque also a site visit to be arranged to the Cladach regarding some drainage problems.

Saturday 25th February at 2pm was suggested as a date for unveiling both plaques; teas and refreshments to be served in the Hall afterwards. John A. to organise publicity regarding this event of great historical interest.

Glen Tolsta BBC Programme

The radio programme is to compliment the Art Exhibition ASTAR which will take place in An Lanntair from 11th February to 24th March. The Exhibition retraces the history of 5 families who in 1843 left their homes in the Park district of Lewis and settled in uninhabited Glen Tolsta. The artists involved with the Exhibition are Ishbel Murray, Coll; Mairi Morrison formerly of Islay Cottage and Anne Campbell, Bragar. All 3 artists have Tolsta connections.


The next edition is now ready for publication.

Tigh Ceilidh

Renovation work is now underway and should be ready for our AGM.


Next meeting to be held on Wednesday 14th February.


Anna Mackenzie is compiling a record of the cemetery and is to be commended for all the time and dedication she is putting into this valuable project.

Finance and correspondence

Balance at 25th January was £8,092.87. Final claim for Heritage Lottery will soon be ready for submission.

Correspondence was received from Nancy and Elizabeth Murray, widow and daughter of the late Iain Murray Heel of 8 New Tolsta regarding their family tree. Donald to get in touch. AGM to take place on Wednesday 7th March at 7.30pm. Venue still to be finalised.


John A. received correspondence from Karen Clavell requesting information about the Iolaire Disaster. This request was granted. John A. to get in touch with her.
