Note of the last meeting.

The note of the last meeting of 24 May 2010 was approved.

Matters arising.

a) Computer and website
There are still problems with website. Innes will hopefully be able to rectify problems.

b) Phonebook
Sub-committee formed to assist A. Maciver with phonebook.
Margaret, Emma, Rhoda and Sandra agreed to be on this committee. Meeting 31 May

This was an informal meeting held with Debbie Anderson (archaeologist) to discuss project (plaques and leaflets for Aird and Garry) Archaeologist was very interested in project but committee agreed that type of plaques suggested by her would be too costly. She had suggested contacting Ken Roddy Mackay ( Broadbay Coordinator) as the best contact to assist C.E. with project.

Ken Roddy Mackay Broadbay Coordinator
Chair gave Ken Roddy a detailed outline of the project the C. E. had been hoping to progress if and when funds become available. (Plaques and leaflets for Garry and Aird) Project Additional estimates and info

Ken Roddy looked at the estimates and noticed that estimates stated lifespan could only be guaranteed for approximately 5 years. He informed committee that all funding bodies would stipulate that plaques must have a lifespan of at least 10 years. He agreed to investigate further to find out which firms are giving a 10 year guarantee.

As C.E. hoped to have bilingual leaflets he said that Bòrd na Gaidhlig could be approached for assistance. Work done by C.E. (e.g. translating text for leaflets etc.) can be used as part of our contribution for project. Committee agreed that leaflets would have Gaelic on one side and English on the other side rather than two separate leaflets.

Leader and Awards for All are also to be contacted in the hope that they will be able to contribute. These organisations will inform us in approximately 3 months if our applications are successful.

Design and Print have given estimates for designing, typesetting and printing leaflets.

An Caidreachas Meeting

a) Archive services
Chair attended An Caidreachas Meeting on 17 June 2010 in Museum nan Eilean, Stornoway. At that meeting C.E. representatives were informed that a new Archive Service was due to start on 21st. June. There are 2 members of staff in post and there is a Gaelic speaking trainee archivist still to be appointed.

b) Heb Connections Project
The proposed software development project through Aberdeen University has taken much longer to come to fruition than originally envisaged. A teleconference has been held with the new research fellow who has been appointed to discuss with her what the research will encompass. The specification of the software development has not been undertaken yet.

It was felt that Comainn Eachdraidh would prefer to keep ownership of their records within an organisation representing their respective organisations rather than a public body. It was proposed that the Caidreachas, which was already such an organization, be the appropriate way forward. All the Caidreachas members present agreed with this proposal.

Everyone present at that meeting felt there was a need to retain the Caidreachas as a support and sharing mechanism for all the Comainn Eachdraidh. It was felt that the retention of the Hebridean Connections project and web-site was very important and that the Caidreachas should be the sponsoring organisation for it. The committee agreed that the hosting charges for the Hebridean Connections website be met from Caidreachas funds. Finance
Balance on 30th. June was £2978.84

Chair continues to respond to correspondence from many interested individuals who are keen to trace their family roots in the village.

No date was set for the next meeting.
