Note of the Last Meeting

The Note of the last meeting was approved.

Matters Arising

None that would not be discussed elsewhere on the Agenda.

3. Student Employment

In response to an enquiry from a student living locally, A. Murray had contacted WIE about the possibility of temporary employment at the Comann Eachdraidh under one of their schemes. Unfortunately, no response was received at all, so there was no opportunity to pursue this in this particular case. However, the Comann Eachdraidh would be mindful in future of any student placement schemes which would allow us to employ students on a seasonal or even full-time, temporary basis.

4. Correspondence

4.1 A letter had been received from Young Roots and D.Murray would respond to the effect that funds had been secured locally for the Young Historians project, but that we may wish to apply to this HLF Programme in future.

4.2 D.Murray had responded to a student at CnAG who had been updating their database of community groups.

5. Finance

The Treasurer reported a balance of £2,046.68 on the evening.

6. Community Economic Development

D.Murray circulated a summary of the financial breakdown of the project progressed under this initiative. The project had been a success, it had more than covered itself financially as people tended to give more than the asking price for booklets, etc., and the Society still had copies to spare.

7. Web Site

Guest Page

7.1 The Guest Page had been disabled for a temporary period as a result of inappropriate material appearing on it, originating from an AOL user. This was reported and the Society would now look at more secure alternatives, with a view to continuing with in the near future.

7.2  A sports section had been included on the web site, focusing on Tolsta Football Club, but there was scope for the inclusion of further local sporting information. Taylor Edgar had carried out the work at a reasonable price which would be met by the football club.

7.3 The names of those people in the galleries could now be accessed via ' Updates'.

8. Young Historians

Sponsored Walk

8.1 A sponsored walk to Muirneag was planned for Saturday, 13 September 2003 to raise cash for Bethesda and the Young Historians project.

8.2 Applications to LEADER+ and the Better Neighbourhood Scheme Fund had been successful to a total value of £16,200 and the Young Historians Project would probably begin in October 2003. The post of project leader(s) would be advertised in the Stornoway Gazette, with a view to an early appointment. D and A. Murray would finalise the advertisement and the job description and it was hoped that employment arrangements could be quite flexible (part-time).

8.3 DA MacLeod (Youth Officer funded by BNSF), based in Back, but with a remit for promoting youth activities in Tolsta, wherever possible, had met with young people in the area, with a view to progress in this area.

9. Painting

Education would cover the cost of painting the exterior walls, as long as this was within reasonable bounds. D and M. Murray would check the costs.

10. Township Development Programme

A small car park in the Camach area would be funded via this scheme and D. A Murray, outgoing Clerk of the Common Grazing, was to be congratulated on securing funds for this project and his wider funding efforts for this community.

11. Specific Interest Groups

It was agreed that these groups should meet fortnightly on Wednesday and that the next meeting would be on 24.0.2003 at 7.30pm in the Community Hall.

12. AOCB

West Side Historical Society

12.1 Anna Morrison from the above group had indicated that she would like to visit the Society and it was agreed that this would be on Tuesday, 16 September 2003, 7.30-8pm at the Schoolhouse. Some 'hospitality' would be arranged.

12.2.1 A.Murray had previously approached Marisa MacDonald of Pròiseact nan Ealan for funding towards Young Historians. PnE was not a grant making body, but she did offer her assistance in organising a concert in the Community Hall at Christmas or New Year, along the lines of that held at Ceòl na Mara in Point earlier in the year. It was agreed that A.Murray would confirm our interest in progressing this and that the Project Leader(s) could be involved in the arrangements of it. It could perhaps be combined with the Community Council's Social Grant.

Tolsta Townships

It was agreed that it was worth revisiting this project, to review the original manuscript and to correct and amend it where necessary and applicable, and to update it as well. This was a significant project and one for which we would seek grant aid.

13. Date of Next meeting

No date was set for the next meeting.
