North
Tolsta is a village on the Isle of Lewis, one of the
islands that form the Western Isles, or Outer Hebrides,
of Scotland. Over the years we, the local history
society, have amassed a wealth of heritage research.
Now, we can share this archive knowledge of family,
emigration, and Gaelic that was shaped by lives spent
crofting, fishing, and of service in two Worlds Wars
and the Merchant Navy.

The
Comann Eachdraidh hosted two successful evenings
in the Community Hall last year.
Volume
1 of the new Croft History of Tolastadh, by Bill
Lawson was launched on Monday 20th October and Volume
2 was launched on Monday 8th December.
The
Croft Histories series of books by Bill Lawson is
now well known throughout the Islands and the Tolsta
books, like all the Croft History books, gives a
general history of the area along with a detailed,
family by family, history of the townships since
the inception of crofting in the early 1800s.
Both
volumes are illustrated with photographs drawn from
the extensive resource of the Comann Eachdraidh
. Click

Tolsta
Head Walk
Markers
are now in place round Tolsta Head marking out
this walk, starting at Camach Park. On
Friday 7th September 2007 a group of walkers
from the village, accompanied by Susan Rabe,
the Western Isles Counrtyside Access Officer,
launched this new Heritage Trail around Tolsta
Head. You can read a report of this
walk in the Winter 2007 edition of Seanchas.
This walk has stunning coastal scenery with
high cliffs and stacks, caves and natural arches.
Plant life along this walk is varied and you
are sure to see many species of birds en route.
Seals often bask at the foot of the high cliffs
and dolphins, porpoises and occasionally whales
can be seen close to shore. A unique geological
site in Tolsta Head has been designated as an
SSSI site by SNH. Click
here to see some of the views round Tolsta Head.
This is not a suitable walk on a windy day.
When walking always keep a safe distance from
the edge of the cliffs.
